Been a month since I posted here. No e-dreams, so didn't have anything to write. Haha. Actually, I fell asleep on a conference call, and probably talked a whole lot in my sleep. But (un)fortunately my phone was on mute, so no one heard me.

I'm back to blogging on here, and will try not to leave it deserted again. Speaking on Wired-Me, I'll be attending an online Concert, Insha Allah. That's right. A very interesting idea! From SunniPath Blog:

Yesterday, I went to Walmart with my parents. We had just left home, and were at closest major intersection, I realized it then - I had forgotten my phone/blackberry/pda/clock/gps - my "everything" - at home. I didn't feel like asking my dad to take me back.

We went to Walmart, and another stop on our way, and we were home in less than an hour. All through the trip I kept missing my phone - wondering who might have called me, emailed me. And I wondered what H would think if I didn't reply to her immediately. Anytime my best friends calls, they know I'll answer - no matter where I am. Once H emailed me, and asking me to call her. I didn't see the email for 10 minutes or so. When I called her, she was like, "woah, Hafsa, 10 minutes delay? What's wrong?"

That's how connected I am - at all times.

This brings me to the point of the post. Early in July, I found a new friend (HD). And this friend asked me something very interesting. The question that kept echoing in my mind for a while was, whether my tech craze represented my love for the dunya?

I don't know if I have an answer yet, but I understand the question better now.

And there are people out there who can live without Email or Cellphone:

Have you ever typed in your sleep?

So this morning I was trying to get some work done on my computer, but I was extremely sleepy. So I figured, rather than read emails, I'll try typing for a while - just to wake myself up. I hit compose on OUTLOOK, and i think i fell asleep for a minute, and then I don't know what happened - I do recall typing something away. I was trying really hard to keep my eyes open, but wasn't able do.. After half an hour or so of falling asleep at the keyboard, I woke up and looked at what I'd typed: (i didn't save the email.. but this is what it said)

"Hi everyone, As some of you already know I'm moving to Indonesia. (there was more gibberish here that i couldn't read). I know it won't be easy. "

Talk about capturing your dream on a computer! Honestly, I have no clue why I wrote that. No, I'm not moving to Indonesia. But I was talking to a friend last night, who's thinking of moving there. I probably had that on my mind.

Just when my blog's a year old!

Blogging turned 10 recently, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal.

That would make it about a year younger than widespread e-mailing, according to that other bastion of the corporate world, Microsoft. Last year it announced it was celebrating Hotmail's 10th birthday. In a press release, the company patted itself on the back for "dramatically revolutionizing our communication habits."

Faraz from Irrelevant Opinions, raised a valid concern. He's referring to networking events that serve alcohol. He'd rather not go to these events, even if it's the best step for his career growth. I can totally relate to it. I feel the same about smoking. The ones from my team that smoke spend a lot of time with the directors, who are also incidentally there - smoking.

And when Faraz mentioned this to a friend, his friend had a very valuable reminder. I wanted to share that here, because it's easily forgotten. In today's busy world, @ times, we only believe what we see.

corporate world really changes you. couple of changes in me include:
1. i write more personal emails - and i spell check, and end them with "Regards" ..
2. i follow up on emails. At times when i don't hear from people, i search for the email in the sent folder, and reply to them asking for an "eta" or jus a status!
3. i pick up my cell phone and say, Hafsa speaking! (which i mostly do... 'coz my cell phone is my work phone :S)
4. i feel every email must be responded to, and get annoyed when others don't respond to my emails.
5. a weird urge to be connected @ all times - thanks to my blackberry - i get all my email there. sometimes at 3 in the morning, i'll be reading my new email that arrived 2 minutes ago.

I'd like the option of checking my to-do list from anywhere - home desktop, home laptop, work desktop, blackberry, - literally everywhere. When I was in school, it was a notepad file on my desktop - it was called.....very obviously - "to-do.txt". It did the job, but very limited.

Seems like more people are thinking like me now (or am i thinking like the rest)

at work, lm wanted to know when daylight saving time started this year...Traditionally I'd Google. But today I did something very different, and weird :S . I quickly typed in a url: yup, a BLOG! The word "connected" has found a new meaning. I'll use this blog to bring out some of the interesting evolutions and inventions. These are mainly created to keep you connected - whether it's connected to work, or connected to the soccer game.

And sometimes I wonder, in this craze of being connected to the other side of the world, are we losing touch with people closest to us? Our family? Our neighbours? If we are losing connection with our family, why is it that the technology that led to this is called an "advancement".

I've got nothing against technology. Technology is neutral - neither good nor bad. It's the way its used that makes it either or. It's the misuse that has the negative impact.
